History
Audrey
Dixon registered as an independent speed skater from Midland
in 1947. The Midland Speed Skating Club grew from that begining,
with cooperation of the Saginaw and Bay County Speed Skating
Clubs. Julius Blasy was the first President of the Midland
Speed Skating Club, when it was chartered in 1953.
Today's
Midland Speed Skating Club
The
MSSC today is one of the largest clubs in the Michigan Skating Association
(MSA), and MSA is the third largest association in U.S. Speedskating.
MSSC is organized and operated completely by volunteers, with
our coaches, executive, meet organizers, fund-raising coordinators,
etc. all volunteering their time and abilities.

MSSC
Offiers and Board of Directors
MSSC is run by volunteers that are elected to the Board of Directors by the club membership each April. The Board the elects the officers of the club from their ranks. Board meetings are open to all members and participation is encouraged. Currently the board consists of a mixture of adult recreational skaters and parents of youth skaters.

Program
Outline
Skaters
are grouped into compatible skill level age groups during practice
and rotated between various drill stations with a coach and
observer. As the season progresses the MSSC hosts "Badge
Night" races approximately once a month. These distance
races are against the clock to measure the abilities developed
by the (youth) skaters. As the skaters become more proficient,
they earn a new badge and sew it on the sleeve of their jacket.
Badges 1-10 are based on the U.S. Speedskating organization's
Badge Program criteria. |

Season
Overview
Skaters may sign up for any of four six-week segments, which cover the season from September-March. In late January/early February, MSSC sponsors the Midland Winter Ice Blast
Meet - which includes a pre-meet pizza party for members the
night before. During the season, the club sponsors numerous
"Badge Nights," and even one "Picture Night."
The season ends with a pot-luck banquet where the coaches provide awards and recognition to the skaters. |
