MSSC dreams big w/bid to host the 2010 Olympic Trials!

MIDLAND, MI –  The national spotlight could shine bright in Mid-Michigan in December 2009, as the Midland Speed Skating Club, (MSSC), is preparing a bid to host the 2010 Olympic Trials for short track speedskating. Hosting the most prestigious national short track competition has been a goal for the club since construction started on the new Midland Civic Arena in 2004, home to an Olympic-sized ice sheet. With a world-class venue in place, a club legacy of over 50 years behind them, and the successful hosting of four national and international competitions since 2005, the club feels they have a fighting chance to bring a piece of the Olympic dream to Midland. MSSC Local Organizing Committee chair Beth Bedford spells out why she wants to bring the Trials home: “Having an event like this in Midland allows the whole community to share in the Olympic aspirations of our local skaters as they compete for a chance to represent their country. It’s also an opportunity to motivate young skaters to see what they can achieve, while bringing economic benefits to the community.”

With the national media and the nation’s top speedskaters together in Midland, Mid-Michigan would reap the many benefits of the national limelight. Unfortunately, MSSC’s all-volunteer Local Organizing Committee faces stiff competition from both bigger cities, and bigger venues. Bedford explains, “We need to compete by offering tangibles and intangibles that our competition can’t match. If we can raise enough pledges to cut U.S. Speedskating’s costs for this event to zero, we might have a chance. If we can offer the athletes, coaches, and officials transportation, food, and lodging, we have a chance. If we can be creative with entertainment and community programs, that helps us too. Anything that makes our bid unique and enables us to host a top-notch event gives us a chance.”

A significant donation pledged from Dow Chemical will insure the viability of the club’s bid, but widespread community support is what Bedford believes will truly make the difference between winning and losing. To meet this goal, the club is asking for either monetary or value-in-kind (VIK) pledges of support from the community to attach to their bid. Especially needed are pledged donations of meals for the officials and athletes, gas cards, hotel rooms, entertainment passes, reception space, gym usage, rental cars, air transportation, and shows of support for the event (e.g. Olympic/speedskating-themed art shows, promotions, or programs). A sample pledge letter, which also outlines donation acknowledgement plans, is available at www.midlandspeedskatingclub.com. In addition, the club is asking businesses to place a slogan of support on their signs/marquees on Tuesday, March 18th. Let the club know of your sign at information@midlandspeedskatingclub.com, so they can include a photograph of your slogan in the bid package as a show of community support.

The U.S. Speedskating board of directors will decide in April which city will host the next short track Olympic Trials. As home to past Olympians Alex Izykowski (2006 bronze medalist) and Terry McDermott (1964 gold medalist and 1968 silver medalist), the 2010 Olympic Trials would be a continuation of the Olympic dream which is already a part of Mid-Michigan history.

Midland Daily News Features Front-Page Story on American Cup 1

Ohno likely to come to Midland for American Cup I speedskating event

By Dan Chalk

05/18/2007

Apolo Anton Ohno is an Olympic speed skating gold medalist and a finalist on Dancing with the Stars. And in late September, there's a good chance he'll be in Midland.

Earlier this week, the Midland Speed Skating Club was awarded the first event of the U.S. Speedskating season, the American Cup I Short Track Speedskating Championship. It will take place Sept. 29-30 at the Midland Civic Arena.

"There's a 99 percent certainty that almost every (major) skater is going to be there," said American Cup I meet director Beth Bedford of the MSSC, who is also the U.S. Speedskating treasurer. "For the 2007-08 season, in order to skate in the World Cup, you have to skate in our meet. And this meet also qualifies people to skate in the World Championship qualifier.

"It's going to be really exciting. I can't wait," she added.

Others expected to compete at American Cup I are Midland's Ryan Bedford and Barry Winslow and Bay City Olympic medalist Alex Izykowski. Top female competitors may include Allison Baver, Kimberly Derrick, and Hyo-Jung "Halie" Kim.

Beth Bedford said the Midland club was in competition with a club in Wausau, Wis., to host the American Cup I meet.

"In the old schedule, we had been slotted for the second American Cup meet," she said. "I said, 'No, we need to (host) the first one, because otherwise if our MIchigan skaters make the World Cup team, they won't be here for our meet.' And we want our local crowd to see the Michigan skaters."

The MSSC hosted American Cup II last November, which was also a qualifier for the World Cup. But Ohno did not compete, as he took the season off. Bedford said that this year's meet should draw more spectators than last year's because of the presence of Ohno and others.

"If we get a few more of those skaters who didn't skate last year, like Apolo and Halie Kim, I believe we're going to have a lot more people coming to watch," she said. "There'll be people coming from all parts of the country, knowing that (Ohno and others) are only going to skate in the U.S. once or twice a year."

The American Cup I is the only one of the four American Cups this coming season that will include qualifying for the World Cup.

On the same weekend, the MSSC also will host the second annual Midwest Mini Cup youth ability meet, which attracted skaters from surrounding states and Canada last year.

Go to midlandspeedskatingclub.com around the middle of June for details on ordering tickets to American Cup I.

Speedskating Olympians
to Compete in Midland!

MIDLAND, MI 5/17/07: The Midland Speed Skating Club, (MSSC), is proud to announce that it has been chosen by U.S. Speedskating, (USS), to host the prestigious American Cup 1 Short Track Speedskating Championship on September 29th and 30th, 2007 at the Midland Civic Arena.  The top six men and top six women finishers at the event will each earn a spot on the U.S. World Cup Short Track Team which will compete at World Cup events in China, Japan, the Netherlands, and Italy.

USS Treasurer, MSSC coach, and American Cup 1 Meet Director Beth Bedford commented, “USS has made it high priority to make the American Cup series a very important part of the season. It’s now a major component of the racing season. World Cup teams, prize money, and skater rankings will all be dependent on the outcome of the American Cup meets.” Skater rankings will determine who will train with the elite team in Salt Lake City and who will train at the U.S. Olympic Education Center (USOEC) in Marquette.

Among the skaters expected to compete in Midland will be Apolo Anton Ohno, Jordan Malone, Anthony Lobello, Travis Jayner, Ryan Bedford (Midland, Michigan), Alex Izykowski (Bay City, Michigan), and Barry Winslow (Midland, Michigan). MSSC is anticipating this meet to be Apolo Ohno's first speedskating competition since appearing on the popular television show Dancing With The Stars. The top women competitors may include Allison Baver, Kimberly Derrick (Caledonia, Michigan), Tina Koenig, Hyo-Jung (Halie) Kim, and Katherine Reutter. Kimberly Derrick, Katherine Reutter, and Anthony Lobello were all recent residents of the U.S. Olympic Education Center in Marquette, Michigan.

In conjunction with the American Cup 1 meet, MSSC will host the 2nd annual Midwest Mini Cup youth ability meet. In 2006, this meet attracted skaters from surrounding states and Canada. Mini Cup skaters will take to the ice in the morning, with the American Cup 1 races following. Bedford added, “It’s just a great learning experience for younger kids to share the ice, the arena and the entire event with the elite skaters. That just doesn’t happen in many sports. Some of the best skaters in the world are coming to this meet. This event shows the natural progression from young skaters all the way to elite skating.”

Further event information will be posted at www.MSSCevents.com as it becomes available. Inquiries can be emailed to information@midlandspeedskatingclub.com.
