Midland Speed Skating Club Banquet Set for April 17th
All club members/parents are encouraged to attend the annual end-of-the-season potluck banquet on Tuesday, April 17th at 6:30. Coach Beth has been working very hard preparing a yearbook, which every skater will receive at the banquet! Join us at Aldersgate United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, 2206 Airfield Lane. Click here for a map. Table service and drinks will be provided.

If your last name begins with:
A-H, please bring a desert to share
I-P, please bring a salad or vegetable to share
R-W, please bring a main dish to share.

Note:  Club skates, jigs and skinsuits will be collected.  Please sharpen skates before returning.  If you wish to keep your skates over the summer, a $25 fee needs to be paid at the banquet.  Skinsuits need to be washed and put in bag labeled with your name.  If you can't attend the potluck, please return everything to Lisa Lehman before then. See you there!

Based on results from the 2007 U.S. National Short Track Championships,
MSSC is proud to announce that we are the club home to:

1 New National Champion,
1 Member of the U.S. Short Track World Championship Team,
2 New National Record-Holders,
2 Elite-level (Top 16 in the U.S.) Skaters, and
Many more national-caliber skaters!


At the elite level, MSSC's Barry Winslow and Ryan Bedford both secured spots in the United State's top group of 16 skaters, based on results of two time trials. MSSC's Ryan Bedford came from behind on the last day of competition to gain a 2nd place finish in the 3000M behind Apolo Ohno - which gave him fifth position overall and a spot on the team representing the U.S. at the World Individual Championships in Italy and the World Team Championships in Hungary.

In the age-group competition, MSSC's Darian O'Neil won every race, set new national records for all of them, and is now the new national pony girls champion. Richard Smith, racing in the Masters 50-59 group, set a new national record in the 1000m. He also placed first in the 1500m superfinal, ensuring a 2nd place overall finish. Kelsey Schiel finished 3rd in the Junior Ladies 3000m, and finished in 5th place overall. Kelsey was also a member of the Michigan women's relay team who skated to a 3rd place finish. Sarah Lehman skated to a fourth place finish in the Midget Ladies 777M race, and finished tied for 7th overall. One of the youngest skaters in the competition, and skating with competitors up to two years older than she was, Sophia Olenchek skated to a 7th place overall finish in Pony Ladies. Kevin Geminder finished 3rd in the Intermediate Men's 500m, and placed 5th overall in the group. Brett Perry, the youngest member of the Michigan Men's relay team, took home a bronze medal in the event, along with Kevin Geminder. Register now for the Michigan state short track meet, March 4th in Lansing.
Download the entry form and be sure to register by February 28th. All registered skaters must be members of the Michigan Speedskating Association (MSA). Download the MSA registration form here. Get directions to the rink, The Summit at Capital Centre, here.


Congratulations to all the skaters who competed at the Winter Blast meet!
Approximately 120 skaters took part in the first-ever 2-day version of the annual Midland meet - renamed this year to the Regional Winter Ice Blast. A big thank you to all of the volunteers who made this meet a success, especially to meet directors Sandi Beaudoin and Wayne Winslow. Also, thank you to all of the out-of-town skaters and their families who chose to spend their weekend in Midland. We hope to see you again! Full results, along with photos, can be found here.




Ryan Bedford Takes Bronze Medal at World Cup 5 in Heerenveen, Netherlands!
Congratulations to Midland's Ryan Bedford, taking his first individual medal at a World Cup! Ryan skated to a third place finish in the 1500m. U.S. skater Jordan Malone received the gold, while Belgium's Pieter Gysel earned the silver. (Jordan Malone skated in Midland this fall at the 2006 Dow American Cup II). Club Photos Monday, January 29th - Team Photo at 7:30!
Wear your club skin and/or club jacket (if you have one), Monday 1/29/07, as photographer Christy Guest will be at the Civic Arena for a team photo at 7:30PM. All skaters and coaches are requested to be in the team photo! First session skaters will be photographed individually, starting at 6:30. All 2nd and 3rd session skaters will have their individual photo taken after the team picture at 7:30. If you forget the photo form on Monday, extra forms will be available on Monday.

Congratulations to MSSC's New State Long Track Champions!

MSSC is home to three new long track state champions: Darcey Lehman (Pony Ladies - 1 new state record), Sarah Lehman (Midget Ladies - 3 new state records), and Andrew Dyke (Pee Wee Men - 3 new state records). Petoskey was host to the 2007 Michigan State Long Track Championship, held January 20th. View overall results by time or by points.

Winter/Spring Session Fees Due January 26

Be sure to see  MSSC Treasurer Lisa Lehman or Tammi Hancock by January 26 with your payment for the Winter/Spring Session. The ice fees are $220/individual or $440/family of 2 or more. Advanced skater joining us on Tuesday nights will owe $160. Remember, all MSSC members must now also be registered at U.S. Speedskating. As always, new members get to try skating for one month free!



   

Ryan Bedford Shares World Cup Medal w/MSSC Skaters
Former MSSC skater Ryan Bedford recently returned home to Midland for the holidays and joined in an MSSC practice session. Besides offering tips to the young skaters, Ryan also brought along the bronze medal he won as part of the U.S. Men's Relay Team at the World Cup competition held in early December in Saguenay, Canada. Midland's Barry Winslow Wins Bronze Medal at Jr. Nationals!
Current U.S. Olympic Education Center resident and Midland-native Barry Winslow skated to a 6th place overall finish at the U.S. Jr. National Short Track Championships in Wausau, Wisconsin, and home took a bronze medal for his third place finish in the 1000m! The Midland Speed Skating Club wishes to thank all the many, many volunteers and sponsors who made the Midwest Mini Cup and the 2006 Dow American Cup II a success. Congratulations to all the skaters, but especially to Midland's own Ryan Bedford - who's 2nd place finish ensured a spot on the U.S. World Cup Short Track Team attending World Cups 3, 4, 5 & 6 in Canda and Europe.

Ryan Bedford Earns Spot on U.S. World Cup Team;
Five Midland Skaters Qualify to Compete at American Cup 1!
Midland's Ryan Bedford, now a resident at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, was named to the short track speedskating team representing the U.S. at the first two World Cup races of the season. Ryan skated to a 5th place finish in the men's competition at the American Cup 1, held in Milwaukee September 29th and 30th. The top six men and top six women finishers at the American Cup 1 advanced to the World Cup team, which will compete in Changchun, China (10/20-22) and Jeonju City, South Korea (10/27-29). Ryan's sister Kristin, a resident at the U.S. Olympic Education Center (USOEC) in Marquette, skated to an 8th place finish on the women's side, while MSSC's Kelsey Schiel finished 14th. New USOEC resident Barry Winslow finished 14th on the men's side, and MSSC's Kevin Germinder finished 19th. Skaters at American Cup 1 were required to meet a 1000m qualifying time of 1:35:00 for men and 1:45:00 for women.

MSSC Calendar now available!
Click here to view the new Midland Speed Skating Club Calendar. The calendar is composed of an empty parent calendar (Midland Speed Skating Club Calendar) and four separate sub-calendars. The sub-calendars, which can be turned on or off for viewing by clicking the box next to their name at the top of the main calendar, are: Practice Schedule (including dryland); Badge Nights; MSSC-Hosted Events and Non-MSSC Hosted Events. You can print your calendar by month, week, day, table, or list view, by clicking on the print icon on top of the calendar. Further, You can select one or more item(s) by clicking on the box by an item's name in the calendar. You could then choose to have the calendar perform an "event action" by: sending you an email reminder before an event, at a time interval of your choice; emailing the event to yourself or your friends, sending a text message of the event, or downloading the event to your personal digital calendar.


Club registration night Monday September 18th, 6:30-8PM
Register for the 2006-2007 season on Monday, September 18th in the conference room at the Midland Civic Arena from 6:30PM-8PM. (Note the location change from previous years.) Anyone interested in skating with the club this season is welcome to come - including those who would like to try speedskating for a month for free! New skaters can also download the MSSC Registration Form and bring it along. Club members, bring your checkbooks for collection of the first session ice fees, skate rental ($60/year), and skinsuit rental ($10/year). Knowing your skater's height will help insure they get the correct size skinsuit. Also, club rental skates will be available for try-on, so wear the type of socks you plan to skate in if you would like to rent skates this year. MSSC will be hosting former US National and Olympic short track coach Sue Ellis October 6-8th, 2006 (Columbus Day weekend), for a 2+ day speedskating camp at the Midland Civic Arena. This year, Sue will also be teaching a separate clinic on Monday October 9th for advanced skaters only. More information on the camp can be found on the MSSC website here.

MSSC coach Beth Bedford elected treasurer of US Speedskating!

 
Congratulations to MSSC coach Beth Bedford, who was elected this spring to the US Speedskating Board of Directors for 2006-2010 - and received the highest number of votes of all the candidates! Subsequent to her election, the 15-member board then voted Beth in as Treasurer of the organization. Read all about it in a US Speedskating press release. Here's an excerpt: "Beth Bedford, Treasurer: Bedford, a Certified Public Accountant at Deloitte in Midland, Michigan, will lend her professional acumen and know-how to the organization in keeping the budget on track.A mother of three - two of which are Category 1 skaters, Bedford has a strong history with speedskating. In addition to being a coach at the Midland Speedskating Club for over 10 years, Bedford has also been the secretary and treasurer of the Michigan Speedskating Association for the last six years. An unrelenting supporter of the sport, Bedford has served as the meet director for the 2005 and 2006 U.S .Junior Short Track Championships and will be the meet director for the 2006 American Cup II and the 2007 North Americans. Bedford is also a competitive skater in the Masters division."
